Validation & Verification

validation and verification are often confused, but answer different questions:

  • validation asks in advance"Is the measure fundamentally suitable for controlling the hazard?" It provides scientific or technical proof that a control measure – such as a Heating step, a Cleaning process or a metal detector – which is effective when used correctly.
  • verification asks ongoing"Is the measure being implemented as planned and is the system working?" This includes evaluations of records, internal audits, Laboratory analyses, calibrations, and trend analyses. Our HACCP verification checklist helps with that.

Both terms are integral parts of the HACCP principles as well as the standards IFS, BRCGS and FSSC 22000. Validation is particularly necessary for new products, processes or systems, and after significant changes. For systems, qualification is also required – see our Checklist for plant qualification and validation. Our training program focuses on the safe handling of both concepts.
